Trans Fat is a Health Hazard

Trans fat is made when food manufacturers turn vegetable oils into solid or semi solid fats. It allows processed foods to remain fresh for longer periods. It was invented as an alternative to saturated fat. But it is now found to be more dangerous than saturated fat.

Trans fat raises the body’s  bad cholesterol (LDL) and lowers our good cholesterol (HDL). Saturated fat onlu raises LDL but leaves HDL unchanged. Trans fat thus increses your risk of heart disease.

  • The UN Food and Agriculture Association calls for hydrogenated fats to be completely remove from out Diet.
  • The US Food and Drug Administration says that no level of trans fat is acceptable.
  • According to the US National Academies’ Institute of Medicine, the only safe level of trans fat is zero.

Toxic trans fat in processed foods, labeled as Trans Fat (Mainly in Malaysia Product)

National library in Myanmar new capital to be upgraded

The National Library in Myanmar’s new capital of Nay Pyi Taw will be upgraded to a digital one to promote research on modern Myanmar literature, according to literate circle Monday.

Compilation has been underway on a database containing information of over 300 authors including biographies of some famous authors.

The digital reference library will serve as a comprehensive source of information about Myanmar literature from the 20th century to the contemporary era, the sources said.

Meanwhile, in 2008, the Myanmar Central University Library exchanged thousands of books and treatises with 12 foreign counterparts to widen the scope of knowledge of the people.

During that year, the Myanmar university library sent a total of 1,021 books and treatises to its foreign counterparts and received 2,320 in return.

The cooperation in the exchange started in 1971 with 23 university libraries from 10 countries — England, The United States, Austria, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, France, China and Germany.

Moreover, Myanmar information authorities have also appealed to the public to help expand rural self-reliant libraries and the number of such self-reliant libraries in the rural areas has so far reached 55,755 out of over 60,000 villages.

According to the sources, basic library science courses are being conducted, aimed at turning out good librarians to contribute to the development of rural self-reliant libraries.

To encourage preservation and promotion of literary and cultural heritage, the Myanmar government also presents literary awards to successful winners annually.

Besides, the Sarpay Beikman (Myanmar Translation Society), established in 1947, has published numerous magazines, lexicons, illustrated journals and volumes of Myanmar encyclopedia as well as extends its manuscript award to literary talents every year.

Iconic Lancia Stratos Alive

Pictures of a spectacular recreation of the Lancia Stratos at Alfa Romeo’s Balocco test track in northern Italy, including images alongside the original revealing that car’s compact proportions remain.

The finished car will be unveiled late this year. There’s no word on price, but given that this could end up being a one-off, it could easily run to seven figures.

It’s believed that the wheelbase of the aluminium F430 spaceframe structure has been cut-down to achieve the right proportions. Among other things, the original Stratos was legendary for an exceptionally short wheelbase that afforded it exceptional manoeuvrability in its primary role as a rally car.

The new car is thought to be pretty light at well under 1200kg, suggesting the use of carbonfibre outer panels. That should result in a spectacular power-to-weight ratio given that an F430 Scuderia weighs 1225kg, and that the engine has been lightly tuned for its application in the Stratos.

Malaysia: More libraries to be built

MALAYSIA’S National Library plans to build rural libraries in all state constituencies nationwide, its director-general, Datuk Raslin Abu Bakar, said recently.

He said the Government had built 1,089 rural libraries so far to ensure rural people have access to reading material.

“In Penang alone, there are 82 rural libraries, of which 28 are managed by the National Library and the rest by the Penang Public Library Corporation,” he told reporters after simultaneously opening the rural libraries of Kampung Selamat, Taman Abdullah Fahim, Bakar Bata and Bakau Tua in Penang.

Raslin said the cost of building a rural library was RM300,000, which included the building, the books and Internet facilities.

17th century naval document given to library

AN EXTREMELY rare 17th century shipping document signed by King James II and English diarist Samuel Pepys was yesterday presented to the National Library of Ireland by the Dublin Port Company.

The ship’s pass dating from 1687 is one of only four known examples of such 17th century passes in the world, and was originally acquired by the Dublin Port and Docks board in 1924.

The vellum parchment, slightly smaller than an A3 sheet of paper, was intended to provide safe passage for the merchant ship Mary of Cork, which was bound for the Canary Islands.

The Spanish-controlled islands were, at the time, major exporters of sugar and Malvasia, a fortified white wine also known as Canary, which was extremely popular in its day.

Historians believe the ship, which was registered in Cork but sailed out of Dublin, may have been trading in such foodstuffs, in return for products such as salted Irish beef.

The ship’s pass was issued at the Court of Whitehall in London on September 29th, 1687, and was signed by King James II, who was the lord high admiral, and Samuel Pepys, in his capacity as secretary of the admiralty.

The ship left Dublin later that year, manned by a crew of five and captained by the extravagantly named Zachary Peebuchet. Of the latter, lamentably, nothing else is known.

The Canary Islands held a very strategic position along the trade route between Europe and the Americas, and there is a view that the Mary of Cork may have been trading with the New World via the islands.

In April 1688, the ship’s pass was returned to Ireland, where it was entered into the registry of the High Court of Admiralty of Ireland.

The pass was purchased and framed in 1924 by the Dublin Port and Docks Board to display in its offices on the north bank of the river Liffey estuary, where the International Financial Services Centre is now located.

It was presented yesterday to the library by the Dublin Port Company’s chief executive Enda Connellan, and will soon be put on display in the library’s department of manuscripts.

Mr Connellan said the company was delighted to be able to present such an interesting and rare historical document to the library.

“This will ensure that it is appropriately conserved and displayed. In its new home, it will also be more accessible to the public,” he said. Keeper of manuscripts at the National Library of Ireland Colette O’Flaherty said the library was extremely appreciative to come into possession of such an interesting artefact.

Library Subject Guides using del.icio.us

del.icio.us logoHere is one method for using del.icio.us to create dynamic subject guides of web resources for a library’s website.

Why do this?
Social bookmarking websites (like del.icio.us) allow for easy, no-tech-skills-needed creating & editing of web content. This content can be shared with others in a variety of ways (web searching, rss feeds, or on your library website).

Examples

The process I used to create this

  • Create del.ico.us account
  • Add your bookmarked web resources to your account
    • Use your own structured language in the tags field to create whatever categories you want
    • Using a “post to del.icio.us” toolbar button is helpful
  • Create javascript code to embed on html page
  • Add to your html page and upload to your web server

Web resources for using del.icio.us as subject guides

del.icio.us, lib2.0, libcamp, libcamp boston, libraries, library, library 2.0, public libraries, public library, subject guide, subject guides
